The oldest registered sex offender of New York is free from a halfway house and headed out into the streets. At 100 years old, Theodore Sypnier has quite a list of convictions including "2 counts of rape" and "15 counts of sodomy and endangering the welfare of a child... as well as three in Buffalo." He was first arrested in 1987: he was 78.
As Erie County District Attorney Frank Sedita puts it, "People don't start to become pedophiles at 78." There could have been dozens of other unreported cases.
Without anyone monitoring him, Rev. Terry King, the director of the Grace House, is fearful for the community. He warns that this sex offender has an "unrepentant heart" and that he may use his "grandfatherly charm" to trick and abuse more children. In the past, his youngest reported rape victim was only 4 years old.
The judge even thought that with his age, he woul die in prison, but at 100 he is ready to "get to know the youngest members of a family that has disowned him."
In response to his statement, his family does not have open arms: just locked doors.
