An 8-year-old boy was arrested and charged as a minor for criminal possession of a gun after he brought the weapon to school. The incident occurred at North Elementary School in Brentwood, Long Island.
ABC 7 News reports that the third-grader had the gun with him in his backpack and then later moved it into his desk. When, the boy motioned for his friend to take a peak at the weapon, his teacher took the gun away.
The New York Daily News has a slightly different version of how the teacher discovered the gun. They believe that it was brought to her attention when she "overheard him chatting up a classmate about the gun."
After she took away the gun, she called the police, and they discovered that it had five bullets in the chamber.
As of yet, police are still investigating why the boy brought the loaded weapon to school. Police have not been able to determine if he intended to use it or how he obtained the weapon to begin with.
While parents at the school were frightened by the incident, some were angry at the boy's parents. One parent remarked, "The parents should be more careful with guns. I hope they are in jail."
No criminal charges have been filed against the parents.
