Here's a mobster's tale of redemption.
But will it help his New York criminal defense lawyer convince the judge to grant him leniency?
Michael Finnerty was a Gotti man. He was a mobster. Twenty year ago, he allegedly ran with the likes of notorious mobster, John Gotti.
But he turned on John Gotti. And Michael Finnerty came clean. Or so he claims. In a letter to Judge Denise Cote, Michael Finnerty is asking the judge to go light on him in his upcoming sentencing hearing.
The 45 year old father of three claims that he has turned his life around, even volunteering with the cleanup and rescue efforts post 9/11. But many NY Daily News readers are not moved by his plea and when polled, many still think Michael Finnerty should reap the consequences of what he sowed.
Michael Finnerty changed his vocation over the years from mobster to television studio set builder. He has been credited with building sets for TV shows such as Damages and Bored to Death. And his hard work is not going unnoticed, as the Motion Picture Studio Mechanics Union claims to support Finnerty in his bid for leniency.
Despite the fact that he turned his life around, Michael Finnerty was nevertheless implicated in the bust of the Gambino Family and he pleaded guilty to numerous crimes in September 2009. In a plea deal to testify against John Gotti, Michael Finnerty was promised a recommendation for a lighter sentence. Finnerty's New York criminal defense attorney claims that his client is a changed man.
Will the judge believe it?
