Former New York Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor was indicted on a number of sexual assault charges on Wednesday and has been accused of having sex with a 16-year-old girl for money in a New York hotel. The rape charges may aggravate some football fans, but the Montreal Gazette reports that the Pro Football Hall of Famer has a New York criminal defense attorney that vows that the man is innocent.
A grand jury of Rockland County formally charged Lawrence Taylor with rape, criminal sexual act, two counts of sexual abuse, and patronizing a prostitute, all of which are in the third degree. If convicted of these charges, the Gazette reports that the former Giant will face a maximum of four years in prison.
The charges allege that Lawrence Taylor paid $300 to have sex with the underage girl on May 6. The 16-year-old girl told investigators that she had been verbally threatened and physically assaulted by a pimp, who had driven her to Lawrence Taylor's hotel room.
New York criminal defense attorney Arthur Aidala is representing the football player in the rape case and reportedly has evidence, which includes sworn testimony by a witness that Lawrence Taylor did not have sex with the underage girl.
Lawrence Taylor, who is now 51-years-old, is a 10-time Pro bowler and used to be seen as the best defender in the NFL. Now, he just needs to work on a different type of defense with his attorney. The former Giant is scheduled to appear back in court on July 13.
